Bathing Nymph at Convergence - Paint Party Friday

Hi everyone! I am sooooo glad to make it back to PPF!!!! I was pretty absent for a while, ironically enough, when I was working on a massive painting project - and all I can really say about that is that I just didn't have it in me to spend time contributing to the blogosphere while pushing the other thing forward.

In any event, that is done now, and am wanting to get back to this.

I have pretty much decided that I would like to effectuate a way to make art & painting a viable income source for me. I see lots of talented people on here who have made it as illustrators or fine artists - as for me, aside from completing this project & selling a few things here & there, I have not yet cinched the deal for me, art wise.

I really admire a lot of the career choices I see - I see professional illustrators, self-made etsy artists, instructors, and everything in between. What I would love to know is, do you have any advice to a total non-business savvy neophyte? Would love to hear others' thoughts on how they succeeded, what the process was like, etc.

For my painting today, I want to share a very old piece which still continues to be worked on - the first time I worked on it was in 2008, and it came from a last-semester painting project at University, where the instructor bid us to utilize the remaining 3 weeks to execute an epic painting, one that would in some fashion encapsulate all our learning throughout the semester. I decided to create a large (for me) painting utilizing an indirect painting technique, measuring 3' x 4' depicting a moonlight canyon scene and a nymph bathing below at the convergence of two waterfall streams.

I left it in a somewhat unfinished state back then, and then last summer (2011) spent a lot of time working on it - filling out the sky.

Finally, a week of so ago, as I was putting some finishing touches on my recent big project, I added some shrubbery to the left hand side. I am contemplating really filling it in with shrubbery, but am afraid of losing out on the caves & valleys & stuff.

Anyway, I hope everyone is doing super OK! Thanks once again to Kristin & Eva for this great blog society!

This is beautiful, very surreal, lovely to look at and dream....thanks for visiting my blog. You were wondering why I called my painting an *antique* nude - I found a box in my hall closet labelled *antiques*, but it was just full of nudes, so I call them my antique nudes.
Good luck with your business, hope you get some good tips! Valerie

Alicia, I really loved your painting. There was so much to look at and think about. I would love to see it in person.
I do not have an art business but we have owned our own business in the past. Networking and getting to know people in your field is important.
I agree with Natasha. You have the talent. Let people know who you are and what you do.

I've enjoyed reading about this painting, you really are painting large, don't think I have done anything quite so detailed either. Your work and patience has definitely paid off here.

Love the painting! It has so many great details in it!!! No advice to offer on the art career thing- I too am a neophyte but I wish you all the best in finding what you want from your art!

The detail is amazing and it must be just wonderful in real life... I think that it is important to have a clear idea of how you want to generate your income from art and ensure that it won't interfere with what you love about it, because the minute you start to feel compromised it will show in your work... and then let it develop from there... good luck...xx

Very cool painting! I love the detail. No wonder it's been something that has taken you a while! Good luck with your business. My advice is... stay true to your heart and don't try to push growth in a direction that doesn't fit. You will read/hear a lot of advice about creative businesses and how to grow them... and it will not all work for you. Try things out, play around, and see what fits. It might be slow going, but you will find your niche! Happy PPF!

Love the waterfall and all the faces. Will the nymph be getting an upper body? I'd love to see a larger pic of this. Wish I could help with business tips but I am clueless at that stuff.

Lovely painting Alicia and welcome back to PPF. My advice for you is to keep creating and do some research on how to network and let your work out there for the world to see and buy. it's not an easy process and it takes time. You can do this baby steps!

What a lovely piece. I would love to see it in person, there is so much to see.

Have you thought about taking your painting to an art gallery? I bet it would sell right away and for a very nice sum.
