5:30pm

finally got the entire plate covered, a process which involved one or two yoga 'backwards-snake-eating-its-tail' pose breaks, designed to eradicate that awful crimped feeling in my upper back. Plus a healthy dose of terror: he did say, after all, that it couldn't be done. What if I just spent the past 4 hours for naught?? what if the paper decides to fall into a bucket of tar right after it comes off the press?? what if there's something screwy with the press that makes the plate burst into a million pieces?? what if the ink has already dried??
I had to remind myself of the plight of the artist monk in Kristin Lavransdatter, who had to bite the bullet and trade in howling indignation for further faith in God or whatever when the glorious stained glass windows he'd spent 16 years constructing in the Norwegian cathedral shattered when said church burst into flames. "at least it wouldn't be that..."
Printmaking as a day-long affair

C. 3pm - after being in the Prinkmaking lab since 1pm, always in a state of constant crouching over the zinc plate, wiping here, applying ink there, accompanied by little save Prokofief and a friendly, garrulous fellow printmaker, this is AS FAR AS I'D GOTTEN.
This is the project that instructor said could not be done, IE have a discrete color pre each stained glass piece in the aquatint a la poupee technique - he said only a vague, impressionistic sort of thing was possible. I set out to prove him wrong, even if it meant taking all day.

'Typology'

quite an excellent book on typography has crossed my horizon. Not only giving examples of all sorts of type from the times of the Barnum Bailey posters on through art deco on through stuff happening in Europe during the world ward, but on through today's wicked diversity of typographic diversity.
typography, like many art forms, is cyclical in nature; trends are picked up, abandoned, then, after 20 years or so, picked off some attic, dusted off, and touted as the 'new revolutionary thang'. Of course, always adding something along the way...
I adore the illustrations/examples in this book, as well as the historical analyzis.

Why am I posting these?

I've been more compulsive about journaling thatn sketching throughout my life, and inevitably some interesting layout and illustrative, collage, etc things have come out of there. Here's 2 fairly recent examoles (last year - current one). Since I don't particularly care to divulge my ill little mind to the universe, I have taken the liberty of smudging out most of the text.

Poster Project - Lysistrata

also from last semester, wanted to achieve the sense of comedy, the greek provenance of playwright, and the war themes as well. While working on it, had trouble with the concept of alignment and hierarchy of information. Once again, this is my final result.
If it looks odd, it's because I had to print these, then scan them in, since blogger will not download PDF files that I'm aware of (one reason it took me this long to put these up)
Old logo project last semester

ended up turning in the two above, though I at one point preferred the two at the bottom
this was the 2nd logo attempt. Still hunting down the 1st one I turned in...
the flaw of the first one - it didn't mean anything and the colours screamed McDonald's. THe second one has meaning, in that I've spent 1/2 my life in south america, and 1/2 my life here, and I feel I belong to both equally. Also better integration of letters to object, whereas in the previous logo, the letters were floating in space.
I like the antiqued look of the colors as well, reminds me of old textbook I enjoyed while very young

5 fave logos
T
his is pisco Capel. For me always was so evocative of that relax-in-the-sunset drinking piscolas listening to Silvio Rodriguez gheist that the liquor strives for, therefore effective. Even before I was old enough to 'partake', I'd look at the label and sigh. Two New York Times logos, I put the one we know only due to the typography, how in our minds it sorta personifies 'newspaperishness'. We see it & think 'reliable news source" etc, and boasting the old-ness. Possibly only the NYT gets away with boasting typography not seriously seen since the 1920's to this very day.
Comparing to old NYT Logo... very strange!Comparing that still to the El Mercurio logo (the main newspaper in Santiago, Chile) - a different way of achieving newspaperness. Stylized profile of Mercury, the winged messenger, plus a diff. typographic treatment - blocky courier.

Two city logos, the older one (BELOW)is the crazy colours, etc. What I like about this one is that the city itself, being on hillsides, basically LOOKS like this logo.
Rustic typography, many colored homes, verticality, fun. It's all there. The new logo (round one ABOVE) apparently fills some sort of need for sleekness and seriousness which seems pretty lame.

analyzing logos to death

at the Earl a while back, w/ my friend Anneliese, remarked how fascinating the Bud logo was - how they chose to pinch the red band right after the word 'bud'
Alicia: "See what their nefarious little graphic is saying? 'budweiser's your bud! it'll always be there for you! buy it' such a small gesture, such grand meanings.."
Anneliese: "just have another beer..."
